The Dialogue between Mind and Body in the Clinical Setting
Norman Allan

Abstract: with illustrations from clinical practice we will describe: how trauma may be associated with smooth muscle contraction and changes in conformation of collagen, and how these changers are responsive; how these contractions/contractures serve as "anchors" for mental/experiential constellations or issues; how the abdominal organs may be specially suited to "file" repression; that these anchors can become symptomatic; how our interaction with them as facilitators may be mechanical, "energetic", symbolic; how they may be stable for years and how they may change in an instant; how projection is always an issue when the therapist contributes; we will point out that the boundaries between mind, body and spirit are enigmatic; while not commenting directly on the matter we will illustrate that the patient has an agenda and our job is to facilitate this; we will speak of the possibility of "copping out" in therapy; and we will talk about sympathetic tone and its communication. Thus we will illustrate many aspects of the dialogue between mind and body in clinical practice, while not attempting a rigorous delineation or analysis of this complex topic.
